home and away in hobart

 
well a week ago we just made it into hobart, the volcanic ash from chile has still been playing havoc with the airlines in the southern states and along the east coast of australia. we were lucky, but others were not so lucky ! guests who had booked hobart cottage for the weekend could not get a flight down, so everything was ready, but no one was at the cottage !

 

everything was ready, but the beds were empty and so were the chairs, the welcoming home made biscuits were placed ready for the first 'nice cup of tea' or 'coffee', but the planes were not flying, so there were some very sad guests who could not come to stay !

so i suggest if you are coming to hobart for a short time or a long time, this colonial cottage is an ideal place to stay and so central to everything, just a pleasant 15 minute walk to the city, but it is a good spot to just stay and enjoy. i am in my role as 'acting booking agent' at the moment, while my friends are away.

then at home we have been playing with stripes !

luscious stripes, beautiful colours and lots to choose from, the latest swatches sent to us

how could you pick your most loved combination, i am still working on it !

and then there are more, but they are taking too long to load, so sorry you won't see till later.

and barbara is knitting this 'vintage' mohair wool of mine from many years ago, such soft subtle stripes !!!

and paula has just finished her spools quilt and it has been slept under, looks very fresh and good, all hand pieced and quilted

and me, you may ask ? i have just gone to the dogs since being here !

and then there is dear old luce ! they are not related, the baby is just a new edition to this family !

 

just some lovely bits

my over the road neighbours, the 'bin friends' and my computer guru brought over this beautiful bloom a couple of days ago, it is a camellia called volcano, very apt in this part of the world at the moment, who would think that a volcano in chile could close down the airports with volcano ash clouds being the problem

i also loved this winter sky as sunset was getting ready to plunge us into darkness again at about 5.30pm, that little puff of pink cloud !

and then yesterday whilst out shopping i went to the newsagent and to my delight the may issue of this favourite magazine was out, i would like to live in this magazine, it never disappoints me

and as i lost myself in its pages last night, i just love the colours, the ideas, the gardens etc., i wanted to buy an old train carriage and renovate it just like the one in the article

my paternal grandfather was a steam train engine driver in tasmania and i went on a dream about ......... wouldn't be fun !

and this heading of an article, that's what life is really all about for all of us 'all kinds of everything'

as you can see, i just loved so much about this edition, and then there was another magazine that took my eye

some of those who know me, will know about me and numbers ! well here we are again ! the tenth anniversary edition of 'quilters companion magazine' and here i was on the cover again, in 2008 i was on the cover, well the quilt that was a joint project when 'amitie' and 'broderie' were operating together, was on the cover !

here it is, i guess the quilt is still at 'amitie' somewhere ??? it is all about the '10' and the '8'

and then in the mail today arrived from the usa, this cashmere knitwear, yes i shopped on line, 3 garments plus postage for less than $100.00 and delivered to my door. they are gorgeous cashmere, i love the colours and the softness made me feel that i wanted to bury my head in them !

i will dream on as i turn the pages of the magazine, sometimes aren't we easy pleased !

winter stitching and chatting

i realised that winter has officially started at the beginning of june and here we are almost half way through the month and i have not done a post to change the calendar over !

lots has been going on, my stitching friends have been busy too, lots of finishes and plans for new projects, so winter will be busy.

first of all a finish to a long term project for me

this is my old and dear friend thelma, i mean old in the sense that i have known thelma and jeff for many years and they have always been part of my 'sewing life'. thelma used to stitch many of the samples that i used when i was in the shops, a wonderful stitcher. thelma cross stitched this alphabet for me just before i closed 'broderie' and at the time i was always going to make it into a quilt to show that the two mediums worked well together. time has moved on, thelma has been diagnosed with parkinson's disease, has turned 80 recently and is also a grandmother for the first time to lola. so this is lola's quilt, to be given to her on her 2nd birthday coming soon by thelma and jeff.

other stitching has been happening on this project of mine

they are not all stitched together yet, just sitting in place waiting for the next 'round' ! i know that i am teasing some of you, but it is a bit of fun !

 

and this year i did not actually have a morning tea, but i had a basket of goodies for sale and from donations from sewing friends during the month of may, $300.00 was sent to the cancer council, so thankyou so much everyone.

a few posts ago i told you of my ever increasing problems with my legs and feet and all the surgical offerings as a means to make me better !!! well in my usual conservative way, i have thought and thought and pondered and have now had some new orthotics for two weeks (number five version in the scheme of orthotics) and i am happy to report that already they have made a great difference to my balance and stability, the thought of two foot reconstructions and the process to get back on my feet, was just too hard for me to get my head around !

so till next time ................................. i have some new, very glamourous shoes, but i am able to walk better, so i am happy !!!
