a comment often said without too much attention paid to it, but this one i'm going to tell you about was special for those of us gathered together.
our special guest was Margaret Sampson George, but the room was filled with special people too, all good friends i'm happy to say and collectively a clever bunch, all living in the suburbs of big cities producing such things of beauty that will be a joy forever !
and another saying 'birds of a feather gather together' was also appropiate and marg had her son send from london this fine specimen for my stick tree !
thanks marg !
it was one of marg's new quilts we were playing with, its name 'going green gradually' ! some continued on with the project started last time !
here are some hexagon happenings from the group
this is the beginning of marg's, see its not all green !
jan was playing with some fabric she bought in london recently
brenda had played with liberty's
these combinations belonged to trish
there were numerous bags and other containers of fabrics
belonging to those taking part in all this fun
lots of fabric choices and all this stitching done by clever hands, the hexagons are paper pieced and all elements of the quilts are handpieced
modern technology all part of the decisions ! (news today that marg has now got an ipad) now we have to teach her how to use one
mitali's colour collection
here carol has her eye on things !
new beginnings of what has become known to us as a group 'the sheet', lovely colours sharene ! lots of lovely applique to come !
there was lots of show and tell of some of the projects, this is 'the sheet' called that because jean used a lovely old linen sheet as her background and with just a few more stitches it will be completed, so beautiful !
jean from linen and raspberry and kate at empty field both came from sydney with marg for the weekend and all stayed with me here in my house and oh we had some fun !
there was lots of holding up to be done and jean and kate did an excellent job, good exercise for the stitching arms ! this is another of marg's whimisical quilts in progress called 'birds eye view'
this top is complete, marg's version of the basket quilt, it is so gorgeous, such a wonderful mix of fabrics and colour
show and tell continued after our workshop on saturday, this is brenda's star beauty from liberty fabrics, this one too, more stars
beautiful brenda ! brenda loves working in red and she does it so well !
this is mitali's version of marg's quilt she calls 'no! not the levens hall' and there's a story behind that !
and mitali also did this beauty of judy newmans pattern, guinevere in liberty fabrics.
the sydney girls think it a very melbourne thing to work in liberty fabric !
this 'no! not the levens hall' was done by trish
this pretty delight is a work in progress by trish done in 3/4 inch hexagons all paper pieced
trish's version of marg's 'come fly with me' pattern using her own centre piece
inspired by the birds and applique, another of trish's quilt tops, and this is another
once again all very beautiful !
gina showed us this beauty, her version in lovely soft colours of judy newman's pattern of 'museum medallion'
more of gina's soft colours, she is the queen of applique in my eyes !
and more loveliness and these two pieces from about 20 years ago when when gina developed her love of marg's beautiful and quirky style
those boots belong to kate and they are made for sewing ! this is a work in progress she is stitching with marg at a class in sydney where they meet once a month, lucky sydney girls ! beautiful applique once again !
this is kate's version of marg's 'come fly with me', lovely hexagon border ! and this is kate's version of the jane pizar wedding quilt with beautiful added borders
an amazing amount of beautiful work and hand pieced and appliqued, thanks for bringing them down to melbourne for us to see kate
jean also brought with her this recently finished quilt top, from an old magazine, bridget giblin's whirligigs, inspiring, love it as a handpieced project ! i've started one !
love this too ! i've started one ! clam shells, i've cut out heaps of them ! i'm known quite well as liking to cut out !!!!!
as i said before, there was so much to see and such beauty, all those bits of beautiful fabric cut up into little pieces and then sewn together again, funny isn't it !
thanks marg for such a lovely weekend, to everyone who came, to jean and kate for all the help they gave me in the preparation of lovely lunches both days and for the fun we had sitting round the old table at home !
the teacher and student, marg was looking very serious in this picture, i think it was about the only time during the weekend, if only the old table could speak !
we are doing it all again in july, such good fun and happy times
